In addition to her private practice work, Dr. Karg continues to be an active research scientist, and has authored numerous journal articles, scholarly papers, and book chapters on relapse prevention of all addictive behaviors to include substance use, treating trauma, depression and anxiety, and the usefulness of various substance abuse assessment instruments and interventions. Results of her work have also been published in newspapers and magazines, and have been presented to professional audiences in technical reports, briefings, and conference presentations. Dr. Karg is the recipient of numerous awards honoring her outstanding contributions to psychology and for her service work in professional and public communities. She holds a doctorate and master's degree in clinical psychology and is a licensed psychologist. Specific to teens: Dr. Karg's finely tuned skills in motivation make her highly sought out by parents concerned about motivating their teens, and her warmth and concern for her clients make her a favorite among teens. She provides motivational interviewing for health behaviors and preventable illnesses (exercise, healthy eating, medication compliance; obesity, diabetes, asthma), and treatment for adolescent depression and anxiety, including reactions to trauma, peer conflicts, family conflicts, teacher and other adult conflicts, health concerns, and academic pressure and difficulties. Dr. Karg also has a strong specialty in all addictive behaviors to include adolescent substance abuse, with an extensive background in treating substance abuse and dependence, and in eliminating use of alcohol, illicit drugs, tobacco, and prescription medications. She has extensive experience in substance abuse assessments and providing an empirically-validated brief intervention found to reduce substance use in young adults. SERVICES: PRACTICE/INTERVENTIONS STYLE AND SITE RESOURCES: Style: As a practitioner I am committed to delivering effective, scientifically-based treatment and consultation services. I provide a supportive and nurturing environment in therapy while encouraging personal responsibility and growth in clients. I seek active collaboration with clients, treatment providers, and other members of the client's family and social network as appropriate. I strive to address the problem as quickly as possible, but also with enough depth to avoid relapse. I set goals early in treatment with adults and couples, or with children and their families, so we can find successful solutions and change behavior problems, emotional difficulties, academic difficulties, or family problems as soon as possible. Site: In addition having excellent central accessibility for all of my Triangle clients, the location has many other benefits as well. Sutton Station is a campus / park with offices, coffee shops, restaurants, and retail shops, and a lovely grass commons. I have outdoor therapy space so we can sit outdoors or go for a walk if you wish. INFORMATION ON FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION: I recognize when choosing a psychologist - whether for yourself, your family, or your company - it will be important for you to feel the professional you choose will be a "good fit." Finding the right psychological services provider is a unique task, as this person will generally be addressing very personal issues with you, your family, or your employees. It can be daunting to worry that as part of your quest to find the right psychologist to meet your needs, you may perhaps pay for one or more sessions with people who don't turn out to be a good fit. As a professional courtesy, to help make your search for the right psychological services provider easier, I will not charge you for the initial session if you feel that it is not a good fit. In fact, if I am not a good fit for you, I will be happy to talk with you about what you're looking for, and give you the names of other psychologists that fit your description. If you decide that I am a good fit and to use my services, only then will I charge you for the first session. If at the end of the first session you still have other appointments set up in your search for a psychologist, I will not charge you then, and will instead bill for the first session only if you decide that I am a good fit and return to use my services. I hope that this policy makes your search for the right psychological services provider a bit easier.
