He serves families, teen-agers and couples, as well as individual adults. He will suggest individual, family, couple or group therapy as the situation requires. His office is conveniently located for the triangle area, at the intersection of I-40 and highway 15-501, right at the meeting point of Orange and Durham Counties. Probably the most unique thing about Dr. Carpenter's work is its flexibility, which comes from the very broad range of his clinical experiences and theoretical perspectives. He has been a passionate student of human nature, as well a practicing therapist. He taught personality theory and psychopathology at UNC Chapel Hill, trained young clinical psychologists there, and went on to supervise clinicians in several mental health centers, and in the Duke University clinical psychology program. He has for several years trained and supervised psychiatric residents in the UNC Department of Psychiatry, where he is Adjunct Professor. He has many published papers and book chapters on various issues in psychotherapy, family communication, and human potentials, and more recently has published theoretical contributions that emphasize the importance of unconscious mental processes. Clients tend to experience him as friendly, honest and accessible. He emphasizes the importance of an individual's unique story and unique issues. He works hard to fashion an approach to each situation that will be helpful. More information about Dr. Carpenter and his practice, and other matters of possible interest, may be found on his website. .
